State-led Development: The Privileged Linkage between East Germany and Ba'athist Syria, 1965–1972

چکیده
Abstract Upon request from the newly established Ba'athist leadership in Syria, German Democratic Republic sent dozens of special advisors to Damascus between 1965 and 1972 help set up state institutions that would move Syria being a predominantly agricultural country an agro-industrial one: reforming decision-making process national government Damascus, setting central planning over production distribution enforcing land reform were some key issues dealt with by East Syrian officials. The encounter proved highly important because two regimes came close enough assess their mutual assets limits upon which they establish long-lasting partnership, whose institutional legacy featured formal politics as late 2000s. State institutions, mass organisations public enterprises thus became main avenues for these ‘Easts’ interact during Cold War.
